As a family caregiver you have been feeling the acute effects of stress. In the beginning, you thought this was going to be an easy job. You didn’t think twice about it. Now, though, everything is changing. You’re starting to see just how challenging it can be taking care of an elderly or disabled family member.
Caregiver stress can affect every aspect of your life.
The more stress you experience, the more likely it will lead to anxiety. The more stress and anxiety you have in your life, the more it’s going to affect your health directly, but also your relationships, possibly work life, your fitness, and more.
In truth, caregiver stress can actually cause you serious health problems.
Are you eating healthy?
If you find yourself running ragged throughout the day, not having time to do much of anything, you might be tempted to stop by a fast food restaurant to grab a meal. This might be completely out of character for you because you can’t stand the idea of shoving that unhealthy, artery clogging stuff into your system. However, you are starving and don’t feel you have any other choice.
You did it once and it became easier to do it a second time. Before you realize it, you’re grabbing fast food almost every day because you simply don’t have time to take care of yourself. On top of that, you may be skipping time at the gym.
You’re not getting exercise.
Maybe you went to the gym every day before your loved one needed assistance. It helped to relieve stress from your job or relationship troubles, but it also gave your body, all your muscles, including your heart, the valuable exercise it needs.
Now, though, you haven’t been to the gym in months. You’re noticing it’s more difficult to get up and down stairs, you’re losing your breath just running from your car into the store, and you’re putting on weight.
As you can see, the stress of being a family caregiver is starting to take a serious toll on your physical health. As you can also see, given enough time, it could lead to extremely serious and potentially dangerous health issues. In other words, caregiver stress could actually be killing you right now.
What can you do about it?
You’re not helpless. Hiring home care support in the form of an aide who works for an agency can give you some options. You can hire somebody for just two hours every other day of the week. You can hire them for even less than that or full-time, around-the-clock care, if needed. Whatever you have to do to make sure you are healthy you need to consider it.
If you’re not healthy, you won’t be much help to that senior who relies on your support.
