You’re not getting exercise.
Maybe you went to the gym every day before your loved one needed assistance. It helped to relieve stress from your job or relationship troubles, but it also gave your body, all your muscles, including your heart, the valuable exercise it needs.
Now, though, you haven’t been to the gym in months. You’re noticing it’s more difficult to get up and down stairs, you’re losing your breath just running from your car into the store, and you’re putting on weight.
As you can see, the stress of being a family caregiver is starting to take a serious toll on your physical health. As you can also see, given enough time, it could lead to extremely serious and potentially dangerous health issues. In other words, caregiver stress could actually be killing you right now.
What can you do about it?
You’re not helpless. Hiring home care support in the form of an aide who works for an agency can give you some options. You can hire somebody for just two hours every other day of the week. You can hire them for even less than that or full-time, around-the-clock care, if needed. Whatever you have to do to make sure you are healthy you need to consider it.
If you’re not healthy, you won’t be much help to that senior who relies on your support.
