Summer is just around the corner. We may have just entered spring and for some parts of the country winter doesn’t seem to want to let go. However, even though summer still might feel like a long time in the distance, it’s going to be here before we realize it. That means for those who consider themselves a family caregiver, it’s time to begin thinking about summer vacations.
If you’re caring for an aging parent, you need time off.
You might feel okay and you may feel as though the stress and anxiety of being a caregiver is not really taking control of your life just yet, but if you don’t have time to yourself, if you don’t have the opportunity to enjoy certain things for yourself, that will change, and often when you least expect it.
In the past you may have gone away on vacation every single year. Maybe you travel with your spouse. Perhaps it’s your own children. Maybe it’s with friends. Whoever you tend to go on vacations with during the summer, you might not be thinking about doing it this year because of your responsibility to your elderly mother.
That’s not the right attitude to have going forward.
When you begin giving up various aspects of your own life and your enjoyment, you are going to be diminishing your quality of life. That’s going to increase stress and anxiety as a caregiver. When caregiver stress increases, the risk of burnout also increases as do common relationship issues. You may begin arguing with your mother more frequently, getting frustrated with her, and wondering why you’re bothering to even support her.
What do you need to consider for summer vacation this year?
You might be considering taking your mother along with you. If you aren’t going to have time to devote to simply relaxing and enjoying the trip, you should consider other options. This doesn’t mean you can’t bring her along with you, but you need to understand the value of a home care aide.
If your mother is not well enough to travel, a home care aide working for an agency can be a wonderful support system for her while you are away. This can give you the time off you need to recharge your internal batteries and give her the opportunity to see just how beneficial it can be to also rely on experienced care. You will probably return from vacation with a renewed sense of appreciation for what experienced caregivers provide.
