How Aging Veterans Can Help Peers Understand Benefits of Some VA Benefits

As veterans get older, they may face increasing physical, mental, or emotional challenges. There are many benefits available through the VA, and even though this organization has received a lot of negative press through the years, it is some type of support, especially for those who need medical attention or some type of extra care at various times throughout their life.

For veterans who need home care support, there are two key pensions that can provide financial assistance to pay for these caregivers. One is the Aid and Attendance Benefit. The other is called the Homebound pension program.

In order to qualify for the Aid and Attendance Benefit, not only will the veteran need to be considered a wartime veteran, meaning at least one day of their active duty service was during a time of official combat, including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, or the Gulf War, but they also need to meet certain financial requirements, including minimal assets and income levels.

Even though a veteran might not need home care support at the moment, that doesn’t mean he or she doesn’t know other veterans who could benefit from this or some other pension program. There are plenty of ways veterans can spread the news about a number of pension programs made available through the VA.

Writing letters.

One way is to write letters to friends from the service. They may not have seen or spoken to these men or women in decades, but if they can track them down, they could not only reconnect emotionally, but help spread the word about certain pensions that may become even more important as people get older.

They can make phone calls.

Some veterans are often looking for ways they can serve their fellow service members. Taking phone calls and spreading the news about these pension programs can also be one way to increase information and knowledge among their peers.

By learning as much as possible about the Aid and Attendance Benefit.

The more information a veteran has about Aid and Attendance and even the Homebound pension program, the easier it’s going to be for him or her to share that information with those who would most benefit from it. It’s not always easy for veterans to understand there are certain pensions that might help them, and when they have difficulty with their own basic care at home, the Aid and Attendance and Homebound pension programs can be instrumental in them getting the support they need when they need it.
