You Don’t Have to Be the Only Caregiver for Someone Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s

What many family caregivers overlook, or fail to realize when they first agreed to take on this important job is that they don’t actually have to do it, at least not full-time. That doesn’t mean a person with Alzheimer’s doesn’t require assistance. It simply means that family member doesn’t have to be the default caregiver, especially if they have other responsibilities to take care of in their own life.

There are other options, including home care support.

Many people don’t consider hiring a home care aide for somebody with Alzheimer’s shortly after diagnosis. That’s because they see their elderly family member or friend as being capable of attending to his or her own basic care, at least well enough with minimal support. What would be the point in paying somebody to stop by and essentially do very little?

What many family caregivers overlook, though, is the impact being a caregiver will have on their own life. It’s going to require a tremendous amount of time, energy, and focus. Those family members will likely have difficulty sleeping at night, wake up tired, be unfocused throughout the day, and take twice as long to accomplish even the most basic tasks. Suddenly, they are dealing with a lot of other issues in their own life, let alone trying to continue supporting this elderly family member.

Why home care is such a valuable option.

The more experience a home care aide has in supporting seniors diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the better it’s going to be for that elderly client. That’s because experienced caregivers understand how important staying mentally stimulated can be. The more mentally stimulated a person is shortly after diagnosis, the more likely it may delay certain aspects of memory loss from impacting them in the future. This can prolong a high quality of life for months or even years.

Also, home care aides who work with clients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia often develop routines. A routine is something that can become a habit when done over and over the same way, day after day, week after week, month after month. That routine can offer comfort to someone who suddenly doesn’t recognize their surroundings, the people helping them, and even their own family.

By short-circuiting aggressive outbursts due to anxiety and confusion, those routines can be invaluable, but they don’t happen overnight. The sooner they begin, the sooner they may be able to offer comfort.

What can family members do, then?

They can certainly help out, they can support other caregivers, they can offer companionship and conversation, and they can simply be a powerful positive force in that senior’s life.
