Home Care for Seniors in Missouri City TX
When a person supports a family member in need, such as an elderly parent following a heart attack, far too often they assume they’re more than enough. They have a strong relationship with this individual. They know what they like. They know what their habits are, their tendencies, and even their peccadilloes.
They never consider home care support services because they assume they can do the job themselves, protecting their loved one, and do just as well as some other individual who works independently or for an agency.
We can learn a lot from experienced home care aides.
The truth is most family caregivers could actually learn a considerable amount from experienced home care aides. Most family caregivers have never done this type of work before. They have no prior experience, and if they assume raising children is the same, they are in for a rude awakening.
Taking care of an elderly individual who is struggling with their physical capabilities, mobility, and the fact they have to give up certain activities they used to enjoy can be difficult, to say the least.
The physical toll it can take helping somebody get out of bed, walk down the hall, get up and down stairs, or even get into and out of the shower can be tremendous. For some of those seniors, those personal and intimate details like bathing or toileting are not things they want help from their adult child or other family member.
So what can we learn from home care aides?
1. We can learn about motivation.
Keeping seniors motivated to stay active is important. Unfortunately, far too many family members discourage their loved ones from being active because they worry about their safety.
With the right type of physical support, seniors will be safe, as long as they stay active.
2. We can learn about privacy.
As a family member, we assume we’re in the best position to offer support, even with those personal, intimate details. However, seniors have the right to their own privacy. If they don’t want their family members helping them with these things or sifting through their finances, medical history, or other information, that needs to be respected.
3. We can learn about consistency.
When a family member is acting as a caregiver, it’s usually on their schedule, not the senior’s schedule. A home care aide would show up at the same time, as scheduled, day after day or week after week.
That consistency of schedule becomes integral in building a strong relationship and providing the type of care and support that is invaluable to those in need.
