Senior Home Safety in Katy TX
What may be safe in our daily living situation may not be the best way to keep an elderly loved one, such as a parent or grandparent, safe. It is important when considering safety measures in the home of a senior that you look at things from their perspective.
Looking at home safety from a senior’s perspective.
Daily tasks and chores that may seem like no big deal to us, may very well be difficult and challenging for the senior.
What sort of things should I consider from their perspective?
The very first thing that you need to consider with regard to senior home safety is mobility and functionality. It is very hard for someone who is young and healthy to fathom the challenge of even the simplest thing such as walking.
As a healthy young adult, we just take the very act of walking for granted. It comes with ease and without even really thinking about it. As a senior with limited mobility due to age or injury, the act of walking can cause fatigue or pain.
Most all of our daily tasks require us to take steps to one place or another. We make our way to the bathroom to shower, down the stairs to the kitchen, around the kitchen to prepare a meal, and so on.
To someone with full strength and mobility, this is no problem. Try to imagine if you had minimal strength in your legs. Was there ever a time in your life when you were injured and not functioning at full capacity? If so, it may then be feasible for you to imagine how difficult it was to get up and down stairs with a broken leg or injured back.
Imagine trying to vacuum or do household chores with an injured back or any part of your body. This is what many seniors feel like when faced with even the simplest of daily living tasks. To bend down and tie their shoes could be a challenge. Going down to the basement to do laundry can be intimidating to someone with balance related issues.
If you are a caregiver to a friend or family member, think about senior home safety from their perspective and not what these daily tasks require of someone in your health and stamina. This is the best way to show your loved one how much you care about them.
