Regular exercise is extremely important, even for the aging veteran. Most veterans of the United States military will know a great deal about the benefits of exercise.

When they get out of the military, many veterans continue to stay in peak physical condition. However, when they reach a certain age, especially when they are considered elderly, they might give up certain exercise regimens if they have been dealing with certain health issues.

Once a person stops exercising on a regular basis, they will usually lose muscle mass month after month. As this happens, it can make getting exercise and staying in shape even more problematic. Even if the elderly veteran decides he or she wants to get back into some type of exercise routine, they may often compare what they used to be able to do to what they can do now. That can lead to frustration and depression and ultimately giving up.

The main focus of exercise should be to get the heart rate elevated, at least to some degree and for approximately 15 minutes, at the minimum.

It is important to note, however, that any elderly individual who is planning on getting involved in a new exercise routine should speak to their primary care physician before doing so. That’s because there may be certain health issues that could increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, or other serious ailments. Once their primary doctor has given them the okay to start an exercise regimen, they should focus on basic activities that are easy to do, low impact, and safe.

Yoga, water exercises, and even walking at a relatively brisk pace (we say ‘relatively’ because each person’s pace will vary) are all extremely effective at helping to raise the heart rate and provide numerous benefits for health. The goal of raising the heart rate is to not only to strengthen the muscles in the heart, but to also increase the flow of oxygen throughout the body, including the brain.
